Modernizing Enterprise Reporting with SQL & Power BI for a $5B Conglomerate

About Client

  • A North America-based technology enterprise generating over $5B in annual revenue.
  • Operating with a workforce of 50,000+, the company has clientele across key sectors including retail, manufacturing, construction, finance, and logistics.

Problem STATEMENT

During our initial discussions, the client highlighted four critical challenges impacting their data management and business intelligence capabilities:

  • Siloed Data Across Businesses – Isolated SAP instances, SQL databases, and manual reports created data silos, making cross-functional reporting difficult.
  • Manual and Inefficient ETL Processes – Batch-driven, manual ETL workflows caused delays, inefficiencies, and errors, preventing real-time analytics.
  • Limited Decision-Making Capabilities – Business leaders lacked a centralized, interactive reporting interface, relying on IT-driven, on-demand reports.
  • On-Premises Infrastructure Requirement – Due to regulatory and security constraints, a fully on-premises solution was necessary, eliminating cloud-based options.

Solution

When we first spoke with the client, they needed a way to bring all their data together and get real-time insights—while staying fully on-premises due to security and compliance needs.

Data Integration and ETL Architecture

  • Our developers used SSIS to extract, transform, and load data from SAP ECC, SAP S/4HANA, SAP BW, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL.
  • We set up on-premises Azure Databricks to process semi-structured data like files, logs, and external sources. Also, automated jobs were created for daily and real-time data processing to keep insights current.

Data Warehouse and Modeling

We built an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) on SQL Server with a multi-layer setup:

  • Staging Layer – Raw data from all sources
  • Integration Layer – Data cleaning and transformation
  • Data Mart Layer – Industry-specific data for Retail, Manufacturing, Construction, Finance, and Logistics
  • Reporting Layer – Direct access for Power BI Report Server

Business Intelligence and Reporting

Our team deployed Power BI Report Server to support self-service and real-time reporting:

  • Finance – Revenue, cost, and P&L analysis using SAP FICO
  • Operations – Supply chain and procurement insights
  • HR – Workforce, attrition, and payroll metrics from SAP HCM & HRMS
  • Sales & Retail – Customer behavior and product performance tracking
  • Executive Dashboards – Company-wide view with AI-powered trends and anomaly alerts

Technical Implementation

ETL & Data Integration
Data from SAP, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and files was extracted using SSIS and Databricks, then moved to a staging area.

Data Warehousing
The cleaned and transformed data were stored in a SQL Server-based warehouse using Star and Snowflake schemas, with business rules and validations applied.

BI & Reporting
Power BI Report Server was used to create dashboards, with role-based access control (RBAC) for secure data access.

Automation & Optimization
SQL Server Agent and Databricks Scheduler automated ETL tasks. Performance was improved through query tuning, indexing, and partitioning.

Business Impact

Faster, Smarter Decisions
With real-time, cross-functional data access, over 100 business leaders could make quicker and more informed decisions across departments.

Reporting Time Cut by 40%
Automated ETL and dashboards brought down daily reporting from 5 hours to just 3, saving time and reducing manual effort.

Better Operational Efficiency
Quicker access to finance, procurement, and logistics data helped reduce delays by 20%, boosting overall efficiency by 30%.

Significant IT Cost Savings
Self-service BI tools enabled 200+ users to generate their own reports—saving the company around $500K per year in IT and support costs.

Improved Security & Compliance
Role-based access control and encryption ensured full compliance with industry regulations, without slowing down data access.

With SQL Server, SSIS, Databricks, and Power BI Report Server, DataToBiz helped the client turn scattered data into real-time, actionable insights. The new system streamlined reporting, boosted efficiency, and positioned them as a truly data-driven leader in North America.
